Grape Grower - Working conditions

Working Conditions

Grape growers usually work in vineyards, where conditions can be very hot or cold, depending on the season. They may also work in glasshouses and nurseries. Grape growers in managerial roles may spend a lot of their time in an office. Grape growers may also travel overseas to see new grape varieties and growing and winemaking technology, and to attend seminars and conferences.

Equipment

Equipment grape growers may use includes:

a range of hand-held trimming and pruning equipment large mechanical equipment such as tractors, mowers and sprayers wire and other fencing equipment frost-control equipment such as wind machines and frost pots safety footwear safety glasses for pruning computers for record-keeping and irrigation control technical measuring instruments such as tensiometers, which measure the moisture content of soil.

Katherine Jacobs checks fuel levels in a frost pot, lit on cold nights to keep vines from freezing

Hours

Grape growers usually work regular hours. In busy periods, such as when planting, pruning and harvesting, they work longer hours, which can include weekends. They may also have to be on call. If grape growers are in charge of frost protection, they may have to spend hours in the vineyard on cold nights.

"There are some very long days. Christmas holidays are often a bit difficult as we are very busy, and most winemakers and grape growers don’t get Easter at all, because it’s right in the middle of harvest. A lot of staff have winter holidays skiing or travelling overseas."

Contact with people

Grape growers may have contact with

winemakers (either in the same vineyard or as suppliers) other vineyard staff (either reporting to or supervising them) contractors.

"If you are going to manage staff you really need to have done what you are asking them to do. You need to know what it takes to be out on a 32-degree day, all day."
